Floyd Patterson will resign as head of the New York State Athletic Commission following the disclosure of testimony -- given March 20 in a deposition for a suit filed by the promoters of "ultimate fighting," which is banned in New York -- that revealed significant memory loss.

A source close to the athletic commission today confirmed a report in the New York Post that Patterson suffers from short term memory problems. Doctors have been unable to find any physical problem that is causing the memory loss, the source said.

The Post said a 3 1/2 -hour videotape of the deposition shows that Patterson is unable to recall important events in his career, is not sure how fights are regulated, and can't remember the names of his closest aides.
