Residents of the Westfield Academy & Central School District will vote from 2 to 8 p.m. May 19 on the school budget, rather than the nighttime vote held in the past after the traditional annual meeting.

In a special election Tuesday, 224 people voted for the expanded hours while 67 voted no.

Westfield school officials had contended that holding the budget vote after a budget discussion led to a more informed electorate. Morton Flexer, a senior citizen, had protested that nighttime voting discouraged some elderly people who do not drive at night and also was unfair to people who work night shifts.
