BATAVIA COUNCIL OKS SPENDING PLAN

The Batavia City Council approved a $15.6 million budget for 1998-99 Monday evening by a vote of 7 to 2.

The spending plan includes a proposed tax hike of 15 cents to $7.79 per $1,000 assessed valuation, a 1.89 percent increase.

The final budget figure carries about half the 3.9 percent hike in city manager Robert L. Knabel's original proposal. Council members trimmed about $70,000 by cutting sidewalk and street improvement projects.
