TIMMY BURTON, 5, CANCER-STRICKEN BOY WHOSE WISH STIRRED WIDE SUPPORT, DIES

Timmy Burton, 5, whose expensive, lifelong battle with brain cancer generated a surge of support for his family, has died.

Timmy had undergone numerous surgeries in Syracuse to remove brain tumors and was flown to Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina in January to begin stem cell transplants -- a procedure doctors deemed a last-ditch effort to halt the tumor production that ravaged his body.

The procedure was stopped in February when doctors discovered even more tumors. He died in March 9 in North Carolina.

On Saturday, about 125 people attended a memorial service here for the boy whose plight aroused a massive show of support for the family from Whitesboro.

Timmy's story became public last October when his family said he wanted a computer. More than $48,000 was raised to help defray costs for the Burton family.

In late February, Bill Burton, Timmy's father, accused a private financial committee of holding back $35,000 from the family. The boy died several weeks later.
