OLAF FUB SEZ -- According to American author and journalist Amelia Edith Barr, "The fate of love is that it always seems too little or too much." . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1822, Florida became a U.S. territory. . . . In 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long of Jefferson, Ga., first used ether as an anesthetic during a minor operation. . . . In 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward reached agreement with Russia to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million, a deal roundly ridiculed as "Seward's Folly." . . . In 1870, the 15th amendment to the Constitution, giving black men the right to vote, took effect. . . . Also in 1870, Texas was readmitted to the Union. . . . In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was seriously wounded outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by John W. Hinckley Jr. . . .

When I get to heaven

and settle there

I'll dine with Mr. Shakespeare

and dance with Fred Astaire

I'll have tea with Mr. Einstein

and cavort among the stars

I'll sing myself from place to place

between Jupiter and Mars.
