What is going on at City Hall? The city is experiencing financial problems, yet officials recently found uncashed tax checks worth $13 million just sitting in the treasurer's office. Now, The News reports that interest charges were improperly "whited out" on some property tax bills, costing the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It is equally disturbing that City Comptroller Joel Giambra has been completely absent through all this, even though he was elected to oversee the city's finances and protect the taxpayer. It seems that he is quick to enjoy the media limelight when it benefits him politically, but when it's time to step forward and accept responsibility, he is nowhere to be found.
