HERD'S BATS ARE SILENT AGAIN

The Buffalo Bisons managed just four hits in a 5-2 exhibition loss to the Omaha Royals at the Kansas City Royals' complex.

Buffalo (2-6-1) scored its only runs in the eighth inning after Omaha had already grabbed a 5-0 lead. Bill Selby tallied the first on an RBI double by third baseman Todd Betts, who had 20 home runs and 69 RBIs last year at Double-A Akron. Betts then scored on a groundout by catcher Steve Soliz.

Three of Buffalo's four hits were doubles by Betts, outfielder James Betzsold and first baseman Sean Casey. Bisons starter Mike Matthews allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings, but struck out seven.

Cleveland right-hander Dwight Gooden will make his final spring tune-up today when he starts for the Bisons against the Toledo Mud Hens at Lakeland.
