My sister sends me The News' Sports Talk so I can keep up with the Bills, Sabres and local sports. I read with interest the letter titled, "Once a Buffalo fan, always a Buffalo fan," by Ron Maselka. It sure struck home.
I've been living in San Jose since 1970. Who wouldn't be a Niners fan around here? Not me, when it comes to the Bills. Fortunately, in those four years that we all remember with "tears and what could have been," the Niners never made it to the Super Bowl. But they came close. And it had been decided beforehand that if they did, my son (an avid Niners fan) and I would watch the game separately.
Of course, I'm a Sharks fan, too, especially since it's the only major-league team San Jose has. But when the local UB Alumni Chapter arranged for tickets to the Sabres-Sharks game and I invited my son, he said he wouldn't be able to stand me and all those people cheering for the Sabres, and politely declined.
I don't know if other cities' expatriate fans are as loyal as Buffalo's, especially through the lean years, but for me, I wouldn't have it any other way.
P.S. -- How about that Hasek? Stanley Cup, here we come!
