A Westfield man drowned Saturday after he jumped off Dan Reed Memorial Pier into Lake Erie to retrieve a remote-controlled boat that he and his 6-year-old son had been operating in Barcelona Harbor.
Divers from the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Marine Patrol and the county water emergency team recovered the body of Norman E. Troutner, 42, at 2:15 p.m., after searching for a couple of hours.
Troutner and his son were operating the toy boat in the harbor when south winds blew it out of the range of the remote controls, deputies said. Troutner jumped in at 11:34 a.m., but the wind blew him and the boat farther away from the pier.
Authorities were alerted a short time later when an unidentified man told a neighbor, who called 911 and the Fire Department.
