As I participate in the madness that March brings upon the sporting world, I am reminded that there are those who compete at a different level but with equal if not greater character and desire. And, unfortunately, they often do so totally without recognition by the local press.
Shame on The News for completely ignoring the achievement of the SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team for winning the SUNYAC Championship in Utica earlier this month. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs where it lost to Hamilton College. Three of the starters were outstanding performers in ECIC competition: Andy Kufel, a freshman from Lancaster; and co-captains Jim Burgess, a senior, and Jeff Dyl, a junior, both from Williamsville North. (Yeah, Jeff is my son, and this is a biased letter.)
Wouldn't it have been nice if those who followed these boys in high school were informed about their accomplishments? Wouldn't it have been nice to read in your paper that the team even played? Geneseo is only one hour away and many area families have students attending.
Spare me the lame excuse that you have limited space. As I rummaged through your pages for some mention of this significant feat, I passed page after page of borderline tabloid coverage of presidential peccadillos and articles on teacher salaries written by reporters with "paycheck envy."
