The way athletes' salaries are going, it may not be crazy to think that sometime early in the next century, some gifted, personable athlete may sign a $1 billion contract. Absurd as it might sound, it could happen.
Probably he'll be an all-star at baseball, football and basketball. He'll be in demand for all kinds of endorsements, along with TV and movie roles. His contract will be an agreement among three sports teams and other media interests. It would all add up to a 50-year contract at 20 million dollars a year. Of course, very little of it would be guaranteed and it would be loaded with incentives and other requisites.
It could happen. Pro sports could evolve into pay-per-view. Will fans swallow that? Millions and millions may, and that billion-dollar contract may become a reality.
