A woman who has been in a coma for the past six months shed a tear shortly after giving birth to a baby girl, Italian media reported Saturday.
The 21-year-old mother, named as Lady Minguzzi, had a brain hemorrhage weeks after she became pregnant last year and fell into a deep coma.
She later recovered slightly and managed to communicate with hospital staff using almost imperceptible eye movements.
Thursday, she gave birth seven weeks prematurely to a healthy girl weighing 5.4 pounds.
"We placed the baby's heart monitor next to her mother and asked if she could hear it," said Dr. Marco Mattucci, the hospital's chief gynecologist.
"Immediately afterwards she shed a tear, which seemed to me like a feeling -- a conscious reaction on the part of the patient," Mattucci said.
