No injuries were reported Friday after Jewett Hall, the biology building, and the adjacent Williams Center, both on the Fredonia State College campus, were evacuated at noon because of an odor.

The Chautauqua County Hazardous Materials Response Unit found a broken glass vial of acryloyl chloride stored in the basement, according to Sylvia Clarke, college environmental health and safety officer. She described the chemical as an eye irritant.

Biology Department Chairman Bruce Tomlinson said acryloyl chloride is not currently used by the department but was still in inventory. About 23,000 chemicals are stored in Jewett Hall, officials said, but none are flammable or explosive.

The Fredonia Fire Department ventilated the basement so the buildings could be reopened.
