A 44-year-old woman was stabbed repeatedly by a masked intruder who broke into her home overnight and fled when the victim's teen-age daughter awoke, authorities said Thursday.
Georgia Russell was listed in critical condition at University Hospital with multiple stab wounds after the early morning attack in her home in nearby Cicero.
"There's a possibility it was an attempted robbery or an attempted burglary that turned into a robbery," police said.
Russell's 13-year-old daughter said she awoke just after 3 a.m. to noises and went to her mother's bedroom, where she saw a masked intruder leaning over her mother and stabbing her repeatedly, said Capt. Gene Conway.
The teen-ager tried to get to a phone to call 911, but it did not work, so she ran to a neighbor's house to call police.
Meanwhile, the attacker fled. Deputies traced his footsteps in the snow through the neighborhood to a nearby apartment complex, where they believe that the assailant got into a car and drove away.
