PROJECT TO RESUME AT WEST VALLEY

The filling of stainless-steel canisters with a radioactive cocktail is expected to resume next week at the West Valley Demonstration Project, after a nearly eight-week shutdown.

The canisters contain a blend of liquid radioactive nuclear waste and molten borosilicate glass, which are destined for a long-term storage site yet to be selected. The process was halted Feb. 3 when a pump bearing wore out, said John Chamberlain, spokesman for the West Valley Nuclear Service Co., the project's prime contractor.
