Helen K. Signer, 97, former head of the business education department at the University at Buffalo, died Thursday (March 26, 1998) in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Helen Kennedy in Buffalo, she attended South Park High School. She was a graduate of Mount Mercy Academy and attended Boston University and the former Chown Business School.
Mrs. Signer taught typing, shorthand and business methods at UB from 1935 to 1972. She also offered curriculum advice and career counseling and found jobs for her students.
She taught night courses for many years in the Buffalo schools, provided refresher courses for secretaries and administered tests for the Professional Secretaries Association. She also monitored the tests, which were the basis for professional certification.
She married Irving J. Signer in 1925. He died in 1934.
Survivors include two sons, John of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Donald; a daughter, Mary Ellen Schumacher of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Cathedral, 50 Franklin St. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
