Move over Barbie and make way on toy store shelves for the Princess Diana doll.
Hasbro Inc. said Thursday it is in talks with the memorial fund named for the late princess to create a line of toys bearing her image.
A virtual industry of sometimes tasteless collectibles memorializing the princess, including mugs, T-shirts, egg cups and thimbles, has sprung up since her death in an auto accident last August. Sunday advertising inserts routinely promote Diana look-alike dolls dressed in exquisite gowns.
But few of the profits from the sales of the Diana souvenirs, which British Prime Minister Tony Blair has condemned as "tacky," end up benefiting the Princess Diana Memorial Fund.
The fund hopes that by aligning with Hasbro, it can reclaim her image and generate funds for selected causes.
