Genesee County officials Thursday announced a three-year communitywide assault on the use of marijuana, especially by youngsters.

The program, "Stop the Madness: Take a Step," was described by Frank V. Ciaccia, assistant to the county manager, as the first of its kind in the nation.

Ciaccia said an alarming increase in teen use of marijuana prompted the program, which has been a year in the planning. He pointed to statistics showing marijuana use by high school students increasing from 25 to 45 percent.
