A man who played it safe by calling for a ride after drinking too much was injured seriously after falling from the passenger seat of a moving van.
George Rando, 27, called his friend Michael Gage Wednesday night to say he did not want to drive home from a Stillwater bar, state police said. Gage picked Rando up at the Saratoga County tavern and drove Rando's vehicle, an older model Dodge van, with Rando in it. Gage was driving the van north on Route 32 at 7 p.m. when Rando leaned on the passenger door and it opened, police said. Rando fell from the vehicle as it was going 50 mph.
Rando was knocked unconscious, suffering head injuries and severe scrapes on his back. Rando was transported to Albany Medical Center by helicopter where he was listed in serious condition Thursday. Police said Rando was not wearing his seat belt.
