A Lackawanna man with a history of attacks on the elderly was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for breaking the hip of a 79-year-old Elkhart Street woman during a break-in last July at her home.

Gerald Fraterrigo previously pleaded guilty to a felony burglary charge in the July 5 break-in before being sentenced without comment by State Supreme Court Justice Mario J. Rossetti.

Fraterrigo, 23, of Stearns Street, broke into the woman's home as she was sleeping, and she awakened as he was stealing $100 in cash from the bedroom, Prosecutor Paul S. Piotrowski said. When the woman confronted him, Fraterrigo threw her to the floor, and she suffered a hip fracture, the prosecutor said.
