As president of the New York State Restaurant Association, I'd like to respond to a recent article in The News about a sexual-harassment case involving a restaurant owner. Nora Curtin of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was quoted as saying that sexual harassment is rampant in the restaurant industry.
I agree that sexual harassment in the workplace, whether it's a restaurant, factory, doctor's office or even the White House, is totally unacceptable, not to mention illegal. However, to single out one particular industry is extremely unfair. Results from a survey conducted by the National Restaurant Association indicate 60 percent of member restaurants have sexual-harassment policies included with their operational manuals.
At our latest association meeting, our keynote speaker, a prominent local attorney, discussed sexual-harassment policies in the workplace. This is another example of how the restaurant industry continues to grow professionally.
