A Long Island man, convinced his friend had used a black magic spell to seduce his wife and curse his life, fatally stabbed him in a fit of jealous rage, authorities said Tuesday.
Juan Escobar, 42, was arraigned Tuesday on a second-degree murder charge and jailed without bail. Hours earlier, his friend Lidio Canales, 44, died of injuries suffered in the early morning attack inside a Brentwood rooming house.
Escobar told police he believed Canales had used black magic during their time as neighbors to start an affair with his wife, police said.
Prosecutors said there was no evidence of an affair between Canales and Escobar's wife.
Monday night, Canales returned to the rooming house to visit his brother, who still lived in the building. When Escobar learned that Canales was in the building, he grabbed a hunting knife and went after him, authorities said, stabbing him more than 10 times.
