Five of 37 homes sampled for water quality here this month tested positive for coliform bacteria and three revealed evidence of e. coli bacteria, a water advocacy organization announced this week.

The tests were done March 18 and 19 by the Fort Erie Water Advocacy Group and witnessed by town and Niagara regional representatives, as well as Niagara Microtech, a lab contracted by the governments. Town and regional reports on water testing are expected soon.

Water-quality advocates filed a $30 million class action lawsuit last August, and the town has applied for provincial aid in replacing old cast iron water pipes.
