NINE HURT IN SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT

Eight children on a school bus and their driver were injured Monday morning when a pickup slammed into the bus from behind.

The truck driver, James C. Dodson, 21, of Harrison Valley, Pa., suffered skull fractures and internal injuries, state police at Wellsville said.

Troopers said Dodson was taken by ambulance to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, then flown by air ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Monday night.

The bus driver, Lisa K. Smith, 43, of Rexville, and eight of the pupils on her Whitesville Central School bus were treated at Jones for neck and back pain, then released.

The bus was stopped on Cryder Creek Road just south of the hamlet of Whitesville at 7:40 a.m. As the driver closed the door of the bus after passengers had boarded, the truck slammed into it, she told troopers.

The pickup was jammed beneath the back of the bus. Dodson had to be extricated from the vehicle, troopers said.
