A group of neighbors pulled a snowmobile out of a pond Sunday, after the driver abandoned the sinking sled.
Chautauqua County sheriff's officers said Darren Wolbert, 30, of Canton Street, City of Tonawanda, was riding on a trail off Ruttenbur Road when he got too close to the edge and lost traction.
Wolbert thought he could regain traction by heading down a slight hill and did not know there was a pond there until he was half-way across the ice-covered water.
Wolbert jumped off and went to a friend's house nearby to dry off and warm up. When he got back, the neighbors had already assembled and were pulling the snowmobile out of the water. He was not charged.
