'CANES MOVING INTO PRIMEAU POSITION

The Carolina Hurricanes took advantage of the slumping Florida Panthers to climb into playoff contention.

Keith Primeau had two goals and two assists Monday night as Carolina held off Florida, 5-3, extending the Panthers' losing streak to 13 games.

"It's always nice to have this kind of night," Primeau said. "It's especially nice to have it when we're in a fight for the playoffs. We need to keep the pressure on Ottawa and New York."

Carolina moved into a ninth-place tie with the Rangers in the Eastern Conference. Carolina and New York trail eight-place Ottawa by five points. Florida is winless in 15 games.

Yzerman turns back clock

DETROIT -- There was a time when Steve Yzerman was as feared as any offensive player in the game. He produced 50-goal and 100-point seasons at will.

Yzerman, 32, doesn't approach those numbers anymore. But he is still brilliant in spurts.

Monday was Oscar night, and Yzerman again was best performer in an offensive role. He scored two goals in the third period and assisted on two others as the Red Wings chipped away at a three-goal deficit against Chicago and rallied for an improbable 5-5 tie. It snapped the Blackhawks' four-game winning streak and extended Detroit's unbeaten streak to 3-0-1.

In the 12 games since Sergei Fedorov's holdout ended, Yzerman has seven goals and nine assists.

Today, the Red Wings acquired defenseman Dmitri Mironov from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for defenseman Jamie Pushor, giving the Red Wings more experience. Mironov, 32, has six goals, 36 assists and 115 penalty minutes in 66 games this season.
