FIGHTS MAR DRILL TEAM SHOW IN BUFFALO STATE ARENA

A state drill team competition and step show was marred Saturday when several fights broke out at the Sports Arena on the Buffalo State College campus, college spokeswoman Nanette Tramont confirmed today.

"But the fights were just two or three people -- and campus security broke them right up," Ms. Tramont said. "There was one arrest, for possession of marijuana. No city police were called to help. Our people handled it."

She added, "People entered through a metal detector and several knives were found, but they were not illegal. The people carrying them were turned away at the door."

About 3,500 people attended the 25th annual State (formerly City) Drill Team Championships and Step Show at the arena.

Twenty-six groups -- from Buffalo, Binghamton, Niagara Falls and Syracuse -- competed in the yearly event, according to organizer Marcus O. Brown. The event is not connected to Buffalo State but, in recent years, has been held at the arena.
