Erie Community College scored five runs in the final two innings Sunday in Orlando to defeat Morton (Ill.), 5-2, and give new softball coach Ellie Hanover her first victory. Earlier in the day, the Kats were blanked by DuPage (Ill.), 3-0.

Trailing, 2-0, ECC won the nightcap with a four-run sixth as four players notched RBI singles. Kristen Jezewski (Frontier) led the Kats by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Elsewhere, Buffalo State (2-0) began a Florida trip with a 7-0 win over New England and a 12-3 rout of Colby, both in Fort Myers. Kari Raymond pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener, while Marcy Bochinski (Maryvale) scored three runs and Cheryl DiPasquale (Sweet Home) drove in three. Nicole Cefaratti (West Seneca West) and Tami Thuman (Tonawanda) collected three hits apiece in the nightcap.

BASEBALL: ECC opened its season by splitting two games against Illinois schools at Fort Myers. The Kats exploded for 11 first-inning runs in a 17-9 rout of DuPage, then suffered a 3-1 loss to Elgin, despite 11 strikeouts by pitcher Tom Januchowski (Lancaster). Scott Davis, who was 3 for 3, and Nathan Grant drove in three runs apiece in the opener. . . . Fredonia (1-3) split a doubleheader against Kenyon in Columbus, Ohio, by winning the opener, 7-6, and dropping the second game, 6-5. Chris Sputore's two-run double in the top of the seventh gave the Blue Devils their victory. . . . Canisius (2-5) completed its Florida trip with a 10-2 loss to No. 23 Ohio State at Fort Myers.

MEN'S TENNIS: St. Bonaventure opened its spring season with a 7-0 whitewash of the University at Buffalo as senior J.P. Gingras won at first singles and third doubles.
