Johnny and Kathleen Wells may be changing their travel plans.
They are this week's first-prize winners in SUPER JINGO Game 827, a trip for two via AirTran for four days and three nights to Sierra Suites in Orlando, Fla., plus $500.
"We needed a vacation so bad; we just paid for a trip last week to go to Las Vegas," said Mrs. Wells when she found out about her first prize. "We bought a piece of land about 60 miles from Las Vegas about five years ago, and we are now trying to sell it," she said.
"Are you serious? I don't believe this. I am in shock. Thank you, thank you," she said upon learning she and her husband have until March 1999 to use the trip.
"We are new to the Buffalo area. We moved here from Stillwater, Pa., about a year ago because my husband was transferred with Roadway Express. It has been an adjustment making the move. The cost of living here is higher," she said.
"I have been playing the game since we moved here. As a matter of fact, I went out in the rain last night to retrieve the paper from the garbage because I forgot to get the numbers. I have to call and tell my neighbors," she said. "I'm just so excited -- I just can't believe this."
Sierra Suites offers a spacious, relaxed living area with a fully equipped kitchen, queen-size beds and a sleeper sofa. Hotel amenities include a heated swimming pool, exercise facility and guest laundry.
Other top-prize winners in SUPER JINGO Game No. 827 include:
Shirley Powell of Buffalo -- $700 furniture certificate.
Jean Carter of Buffalo -- An autographed Buffalo Sabres hockey stick.
Linda Wiers of Holland -- One use of The News' box at North AmeriCare Park for a Bisons game.
Nancy Wertman of Orchard Park -- A $60 entertainment certificate.
"Oh, my goodness, that's the furniture," said Mrs. Powell when told she was this week's second-prize winner. "This prize is first choice for me."
Mrs. Powell has been playing the game only about a year and applauded her good luck so far. "I've been pretty lucky in a year. I won Buffalo Sabres tickets just a couple of months ago. Thanks so much."
Jean Carter, this week's third-prize winner of an autographed Buffalo Sabres hockey stick, admits she's "not a Buffalo Sabres fan" but knows her prize will make her grandson, Michael Martin, very happy.
"I love playing the game. It's been about two years that I've been playing, and this is the first time I've won. If I happen to miss my paper, I'm lost without it," she added.
Mrs. Wiers had this to say about winning fourth prize, the use of The News box at North AmeriCare Park for a Bisons game: "I'm not yet a Bisons fan -- but I soon will be."
"I play off and on, and my sister, Kelly Reumann, who won a Family Fun Pack just last week, told me I better get in the game this week. Boy, I never win anything. Thank you very much."
"You're kidding -- cool," said Mrs. Wertman when told she had won fifth prize, a $60 entertainment certificate. "I've been playing for years, 'cause my parents always played. Great! Thanks so much. I love this prize."
Remember, it is not necessary to write or phone The Buffalo News if you are one of the other 45 winners. Prizes soon will be mailed to you.
