LOCKPORT AGAIN PAYS COUNTY TO KEEP LOCAL LEVY DOWN

True to a long-standing tradition, the Lockport Town Board Tuesday approved paying the county $211,500 to reduce the county tax levy for town residents.

Supervisor J. O. Thompson said the payment will hold residents' county tax rate to the same amount as in previous years, or $8.11 per $1,000 assessed valuation rather than $8.37.

After the formal meeting, Town Justice Wesley Arnold swore in newly elected Councilwoman Deborah Gaskill and officials who were re-elected in November, including Thompson, Town Justice John B. Austin, Councilman Paul H. Pettit, Highway Superintendent Lewis J. Hagen Jr. and Town Clerk Nancy A. Brooks.

Mrs. Gaskill will replace Kenneth Pembroke, a 17-year board member, who did not seek re-election.

In other business, the board:

Approved establishing a deputy assessor's post subject to approval by the Civil Service Commission.

Authorized installing a high-pressure sodium light at the intersection of Bartz and Old Beattie roads.
