Independent Health has been named the top health maintenance organization in Western New York and among the best in the country by Newsweek magazine. The plan, ranked 28th out of 88 of the nation's largest HMOs, received an overall rating of "B," with "A" ratings in the adult care categories of staying healthy, and in getting well; and "B" ratings in the kids' care categories of staying health, and living with illness.

Aurora Technology Corp. in Lackawanna, a developer and manufacturer of compressed natural gas compressor refueling packages, has opened CNG fueling stations in Crown Point, Valparaiso, and Remington, Ind. Two of the stations are owned by Northern Indiana Public Service Co. and another by GreenFuels Inc. And, the firm also has opened a CNG fueling station in Port Said, Egypt that is owned by the Natural Gas Vehicle Co.
The Wyoming County Highway Department has received the 1997 Quality Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Award in the municipal project category from the New York Asphalt Pavement Association. The award was given for the resurfacing of East Bethany Road, Town of Middlebury, a paving project that included a three-mile section from the Village of Wyoming to the Genesee County line.
