Don't tell Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo they're funny: The Generation X comedian-actors know funny, and they're not it.

"I never thought I was funny," Stiller said in a conversation with Garofalo in a story in Sunday's New York Times Magazine. "You think you're funny?"

"I'm definitely not funny," replied Garofalo, star of "The Truth About Cats and Dogs." "I know what's not funny, I know what a hack is, and I laugh at all the right things, but you'd never characterize me as a 'funny person.'"

Others beg to differ. Entertainment Weekly recently named Stiller No. 44 and Garofalo No. 39 on its "50 Funniest People Alive" list, due in part to their work together on Fox TV's "The Ben Stiller Show" -- which lasted 12 episodes in 1992 -- and the movie "Reality Bites."

"I don't understand those lists," Stiller said. "I find it kind of embarrassing to be on it with people like Alan King, who has a whole lifetime of work."
