EQUAL RIGHTS ARE GREAT -- BUT SANTA SHOULD BE A MAN

Santa's Park is a wonderful event put on each year in Chestnut Ridge Park by the Erie County Parks Department. The trip to see Santa begins at the park's casino, where families catch a hay ride to the "North Pole." First there's a stop at a "post office," so kids can mail their letters to Santa, and then it's on to "Santa's workshop."

Of course, the biggest thrill is to meet Santa. But this year, we were shocked to find Santa was a woman. I'm all for women working in jobs previously held exclusively by men, but this is a bit much. If a woman wanted to participate, she could have been Mrs. Claus. My 4-year-old daughter was confused and upset. I assured her that Santa is a man and suggested Mrs. Claus was just filling in for Santa, who was sick.

In this day and age when children grow up so fast, why cast doubts on the jolly old elf? Surely there was a male employee who would have made a suitable Santa.
