DOWNSIZED TO DEATH

Losing your job can be as traumatic as losing a beloved relative or friend, but society doesn't offer you the kind of support that's available following a death.

J. Damian Birkel, author of the book "Career Bounce-Back," says workers who lose their jobs go through the same kind of stages -- shock, denial, fear, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance -- that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross has outlined in her works on death and dying. Birkel says such workers will go through waves of emotions that they need to confront and manage as the first step toward regaining control of their lives and ultimately toward finding another job.
