Erik O'Bryan (North Tonawanda) had 23 points and Leshawn Oates added 22 points and six rebounds for Buffalo State (2-3) in its 98-90 loss to host Defiance of Ohio (5-5) in the first round of the Purple & Gold Holiday Tournament.
Defiance broke an 88-88 tie with 1:35 left and ended the game on a 10-2 run, with all 10 points coming from the foul line. The Bengals face Rose-Hulman in the consolation game at 6 tonight. In another men's basketball game, Anibal Soler had 15 points and four assists for Daemen in a 60-55 loss at Rollins (Fla).
In women's basketball action, Hilary Waltman and Gen Lukenda had 15 points each as St. Bonaventure defeated Syracuse, 71-66, before 565 at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies led, 30-28, at halftime and outscored the Orange, 41-38, in the second half.
St. Bonaventure is back in action after a week-long break to host Siena at 7:30 in the Reilly Center. The Bonnies (8-3) come off an 81-67 loss to No. 14 Iowa in Puerto Rico, a defeat that snapped a five-game win streak. Do-it-all sophomore guard Tim Winn from LaSalle is second on the Bonnies in scoring at 16.3 points per game and first in assists (51), steals (32) and three-point goals (24). Siena (4-3), which has won four of five since an 0-2 start, is led by Jim Cantamessa, with a 19.3 scoring average and 18 treys. The Saints have also been off a week and come off a 105-69 win over Holy Cross.
