D. HARRY KARNES, FORMER FUNERAL DIRECTOR

D. Harry Karnes, 73, of Hamburg, a former funeral director, died unexpectedly Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) in Mercy Hospital.

He was the funeral director and licensed manager of James T. Karnes Funeral Home in Lackawanna from 1947 to 1960. From 1960 to 1997, he was licensed associate funeral director of Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home in Hamburg, Link-Fox Co. in Buffalo and Cremation Centers of Western New York in Buffalo. He was associate director of Robert F. Lord Funeral Home in the Town of Tonawanda, which closed in the early 1990s.

Karnes retired from Erie Community College City Campus, where he was a custodial engineer.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former Parents' Society officer, a member of the Hamburg PTA, past chairman of Boy Scout Troop 400 and a former deputy grand knight in the Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Hamburg for 30 years and was a church usher.

Survivors include his wife, the former Grace Coyle; a daughter, Deborah Albertine of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Gregory R. of Tampa, Fla., and Edward of Houston; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home, S-4199 Lake Shore Road, Hamburg. [ulrch]
