Peruvian authorities Sunday examined the remains of what they believed to be two Japanese university students found buried in the Amazon jungle after a gang of soldiers allegedly beat them to death.
The 16 soldiers held on suspicion of killing the students took investigators to a spot a mile from their army post to show where the bodies were buried, a police officer said.
Takairo Miyashita, 23, and Chiaki Ito, 22, were on a boat expedition down the Amazon from Peru to Brazil. Soldiers allegedly stopped the students on the pretext of inspecting their boat.
The soldiers then allegedly kicked and punched them to death before robbing them.
