Niagara Regional Police are searching for a killer or killers who gunned down a 44-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman in the man's apartment.
The man and woman were found about 9 a.m. Saturday in the apartment at 2145 Effingham St. in Pelham, just north of Welland.
"Fire personnel, police and an ambulance responded to a phone call. Both victims were dead of apparent gunshot wounds. It is being investigated as a double homicide. It is not a homicide-suicide," said Police Sgt. Mark Carter.
The woman, identified as Michelle Katrynuk, of Welland, was a visitor at the apartment, Carter said. The man was identified as Charles Douglas Dolan, who lived in the apartment.
Police late Saturday were releasing little information about the killings, which took place in a neighborhood described as quiet and usually free from crime. Police dogs were used to search the area, but officers said no weapons were found.
Carter said no one has been questioned yet "as a suspect."
"It's early in the investigation," Carter said. "We're looking at all possibilities right now."
