A Niagara Falls man was arrested Saturday night after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident and was followed by the other car's driver to a nearby store, Officer Timothy Gilliam said.
Douglas R. Gorzka, 28, of Hyde Park Boulevard was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended registration and leaving the scene of an accident, Gilliam said. The accident occurred at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Military Road in Niagara Falls at about 8 p.m.
The driver of the other car, Gordon Bloom of Lockport, followed Gorzka to the Kmart store on Military Road, where Gilliam said Gorzka entered the store and bought a large pack of chewing gum. The officer said, "We believe he did that to mask the fumes of alcohol."
Bloom's wife, Sharon, 52, a passenger, was taken to Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, for treatment of a back injury.
