Corey Murphy scored 12:31 into overtime Saturday to give Colgate a 4-3 victory over Niagara in the first round of the Syracuse Invitational hockey tournament.
Niagara (5-3) plays in today's consolation game against the Clarkson/Minnesota Duluth loser.
Niagara took the early lead on a shorthanded goal by Mike Isherwood. Colgate tied it at 5:27 of the second period. A power-play goal by Drew Burgess at the 6:50 mark of the second period put Colgate up, 2-1. Niagara answered with a power-play goal of its own from Kyle Martin. Forward Aaron Morris scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season, to put Niagara up, 3-2. Colgate forced overtime with a goal with 43 second left in regulation.
"This game tonight was a lot like life," said Niagara coach Blaise MacDonald. "We played great. We deserved to win. We hit the post in OT, and they end up beating us with a cheap goal."
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Daemen rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit and beat North Florida University, 82-81. Tony Jones' (Williamsville South) basket with 23 seconds left gave Daemen a four-point lead. Daemen shot 71 percent from the floor in the second half to win its seventh game in nine starts.
Monty Montgomery (Bennett) was one of five players in double figures with 19 points. Chris Moore (Park) added 16 points.
