Although the Amherst pellet project has not yet turned a profit, there is no doubt in my mind that it has already helped the environment. It is putting some of our nitrogen waste back into the land where it belongs, instead of adding it to our lakes and rivers. The animals that live in these waters supply enough waste to balance their nitrogen cycle without us adding ours.
We should all support government projects that avoid the buildup of nitrogen toxicity in our lakes and rivers. (Though I may resist if the town asks me to turn in our sewer system for an outhouse.) As a taxpayer, I applaud our elected leaders for having the foresight to do what is right for future generations.
