John R. Barnard, operations coordinator for the Festival of Lights, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, after a lengthy illness.

Barnard, 56, of Rainbow Boulevard was born in Niagara Falls.

He had served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Barnard then worked at various tool and die companies all over the United States before returning to Niagara Falls in the late 1980s.

He graduated from Niagara University in Lewiston in 1992.

Barnard had been employed for the past five years by the Niagara Falls Area Chamber of Commerce as the operations coordinator for the Festival of Lights.

He is survived by his mother, Nora Pruester, and three brothers, Patrick of North Tonawanda, Michael D. O'Grady of Columbia, S.C., and Thomas of Parkland, Fla.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today in Rhoney Funeral Home, 1124 Ontario Ave. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
