Mike Tyson's ear-biting during his heavyweight title fight with Evander Holyfield earned the ex-champion an award as the most pretentious sports figure of 1997.
Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield's ears in their June 28 fight. Nearly 16,000 people voted via the mail and computers, according to Smirnoff, which sponsored the poll, and Tyson won 21 percent of the vote.
Tiger Woods finished second in the voting with 16 percent. He was nominated because the All-Star Cafe restaurants in which he has an ownership share did not accept American Express, even though Woods is spokesman for the company.
Placing third with 13 percent was New York Jets receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who was in the running because of the unkind things he said about teammates in a book published after his undistinguished rookie year.
