RED CROSS HELPS MOTHER, SON FORCED FROM HOME BY FIRE

The Red Cross is aiding a mother and son routed from their home by a fire at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, fire dispatcher Jan Wellsby said.

Damage was estimated at $30,000 in the blaze at 340 Spruce Ave. Hylda Bevans, 53, and her son Clayton, 24, escaped after fire erupted in an attic bedroom of the 1 1/2 -story frame dwelling. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The landlord, Patricia Patronski of Lake Road, Porter, was cited for not providing a smoke detector in the bedroom area, Ms. Wellsby said.

The fire, which was declared under control at 4:23 p.m., was confined to the walls, ceiling, and contents of the bedroom, but there was smoke and water damage throughout the dwelling.
