A man who asked to be shown a shotgun in a crowded sporting goods store on Christmas Eve went into a dressing room and killed himself.
Dozens of people were making last-minute buys at Jumbosports when James Byrd, 46, asked a clerk to show him a 12-gauge shotgun.
He walked with it toward the dressing room, and the clerk followed. When Byrd locked himself in the stall, the clerk asked if he was all right, said Ed McDonough, a Seminole County sheriff's spokesman.
There was no answer, only a shotgun blast.
Police don't know whether Byrd picked up ammunition from behind the store counter unnoticed or had his own.
No suicide note was found, and Byrd, from Winter Park, apparently told no one of his intentions, police said.
