An Orchard Park woman died Thursday when her van struck a tree in the Town of Clarence, state police said.
The crash happened shortly after noon in front of the Red Mill Inn, a restaurant at 8326 Main St.
Mary Manganello, 55, no address given, was traveling west on Main Street when her gray Chevrolet van veered off the road and struck the tree head-on, said Trooper Bruce Bell.
She was transported to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, troopers said.
Troopers did not find any skid marks at the scene, Bell said.
"I have no idea why she drove right into the tree," Bell said.
No other cars were involved. The woman was traveling alone.
Police did not find any witnesses, but a neighbor said he heard the crash.
"It sounded like a truck dropped a Dumpster," said Gary Lindner of 8301 Main St., who lives across the street from the restaurant.
The speed limit is 40 mph on the stretch of Main Street she traveled. She drove at least that fast, but her speed was not excessive, Bell said.
The woman suffered massive head and leg injuries, Bell said.
