Dr. Irene Hu and her late husband, Dr. Ronald Chang, will be honored with the 1998 "Spirit of Gowanda Award" during the annual Chamber of Commerce "spirit" dinner in the American Legion Hall Feb. 21.
This year's "Spirit of Gowanda" banquet marks the 10th anniversary of the Chamber and begins the village's sesquicentennial year.
The husband-and-wife medical team served Gowanda for more than 25 years until their retirement in 1986. They were selected for the honor before Chang died in October.
Chang was chief thoracic surgeon at the former J.N. Adam Tuberculosis Hospital in Perrysburg. He also practiced at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, was medical director of Lake Shore Hospital in Irving and consulted with the Gowanda Psychiatric Center, Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk and Salamanca Hospital.
Dr. Hu, who began her practice at Tri-County in 1959 eventually became chief of staff and later served on the hospital board of directors. She, too, was on the staff of Gowanda Psychiatric Center and Lake Shore Hospital.
