SISTER MARY REGINA LEISING, SCHOOL'S FIRST PRINCIPAL

Sister Mary Regina Leising, 88, founding principal of Infant of Prague School in Cheektowaga, died Monday (Dec. 22, 1997) in St. Mary of the Angels Convent, Williamsville.

Born in Clarence Center, the former Agnes Leising attended St. Mary's Elementary School in Swormville and Hurst's Private Business School. After working as bookkeeper and secretary at Community Steel Corp., she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Third Order Regular on Feb. 24, 1933, and professed her final vows on Aug. 20, 1938.

Sister Leising attended Canisius College and taught at St. Aloysius Parish in Springville. In 1939, she returned to the Motherhouse, where she tended to the Order's clerical work and taught religious education classes.

In 1947, she became founding principal of Infant of Prague School. After being elected to the General Council of the Congregation, she became general secretary and devoted full time to serving the congregation in the general office. She held this position from 1955 to 1991.

She is survived by three sisters, Maria Wertman of Lockport, Cecilia Hibschweiler of East Amherst and Lorraine Weaver of Phoenix.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel, 400 Mill St., Williamsville, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery on the convent grounds.
