It's not every day that Bill Gates gets humbled -- particularly by a mere millionaire.

Less than a month after the billionaire founder of Microsoft Corp. wrote a check for $5,000 to help pay for a local playground, one of Glenvil's native sons donated four times that amount.

Merle Hinrichs, chairman of Asian Sources Media in Hong Kong, sent a check for $20,000 after project organizers said they needed more money to pay for more playground equipment.

Organizer Aileen Grummert said she looked at the check from Hinrichs several times to make sure she was reading it correctly.

"I looked at it and my hands were shaking so bad," she said recently. "I just couldn't believe it."

Hinrichs attended school in Glenvil and was married here 10 years ago.

In November, letters were sent to Hinrichs and others soliciting donations for the playground project. Gates made national news when he mailed his gift to the central Nebraska village of 300 people.
