The announced closing of the tennis courts and related health facilities at the Buffalo Hilton creates an interesting opportunity to build anintegrated sports facility in conjunction with the projected hockey rinks near Marine Midland Arena. Close to 1,000 people use the tennis courts at the Hilton on a regular basis. Given the right kind of indoor/outdoor facility, these people would pay $1,000 or so a year for membership.
Not only would it benefit them, but it would broaden the constituency of support for the ice rinks while bringing a whole new adult, middle-class group of users to the facility. An integrated, multiuse sports complex would be a welcome addition as we try to create a diversified, mixed-use area at or near the waterfront.
